Round 2: Kurt Vonnegut - Tool or Pet?

Kurt Vonnegut, "Galapagos" (1985)
"The seeing-eye dog never barked, played with other dogs, investigated interesting smells or noises, or chased animals which had been the natural prey of its ancestors.. Because when she was a puppy, big-brained human beings had shown her hate and withheld food whenever she did those things... They removed her sexual organs, made sure she would never be distracted by sexual urgencies."

This is just a mind-blowing passage. Vonnegut has the ability to invoke an unacknowledged tragedy with a literal, matter-of-fact tone.

Handicapped dogs for handicapped people.

The sweetest dog may be the most abused dog. The wilder, the freer.
